About Us
Our story
BestLife started when founder Kath Coory searched for something stimulating, supported and fun for kids with special needs to do on the weekend.
Kath, mum of then 11-year-old Lara, investigated emergency respite, but couldn’t contemplate sending Lara to stay with strangers. Lara is a social and outgoing girl, she also has intellectual and mild physical disabilities that mean she needs support with many things, including meals and dressing.
The care Kath found (though competent) was impersonal. No one would consider it for a mainstream child so why should it be good enough for Lara?
Together with her friend Tina, whose son Tom has down syndrome, they searched for something more stimulating and enriching to do on weekends and holidays with the support needed for their kids. Eventually Kath and Tina decided the only thing to do was to create what they were looking for.
They called it BestLife and started a pilot program of Saturday night sleepovers, every teen’s dream, for small groups at a house within the grounds of Mackenzie special school on Brisbane’s southside.
Project sleepover was a hit!
BestLife has since grown to include a variety of programs to suit the many kids and families that have become part of the BestLife family. Offering fun and supportive day programs, sleep overs and even holiday programs.
